  3.                    ACTION ITEM MANAGER II (tm)
  4.  
  5. This  guide covers installation and startup of Action Item  Manager
  6. (AIM) II.  The complete User's Guide is built into the program  and
  7. is  accessed by selecting the "USER'S GUIDE" option.  In  order  to
  8. get  the  most benefit from this program, we strongly suggest  that
  9. you read the user's guide.
  10.  
  11. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
  12.    AIM  II requires an IBM Compatible PC, DOS 3.3 or above, a  hard
  13.    disk and 500k of available RAM memory.
  14.  
  15. DOS CONFIGURATION
  16.    For  proper  operation  of all functions, the  program  requires
  17.    that  the number of DOS file handles be set to 31 or more.  This
  18.    number  is  established  when you  boot  your  computer  and  is
  19.    derived   from  settings  in  file  "CONFIG.SYS"  in  the   root
  20.    directory  of  your start-up disk drive.  For proper  operation,
  21.    you  MUST have file "CONFIG.SYS" in the root directory  of  your
  22.    start-up  disk and it MUST contain the line "FILES=31"  (use  40
  23.    or above if you will be running the program under Windows).

  25.    Once  you  have added or edited the "CONFIG.SYS" file, YOU  MUST
  26.    RE-BOOT  your computer for the changes to take effect.   Consult
  27.    your DOS manual for additional information.

  29. INSTALLATION
  30.    To  install,  or  reinstall Action Item  Manager  II  place  the
  31.    distribution disk into drive A and type the following commands:
  32.    
  33.    A:          if  you are installing from drive B: substitute  "B"
  34.                for "A".
  35.    INSTALL d   where  "d" is the hard disk drive where you want  to
  36.                install  the  program  ("INSTALL  C"  installs   the
  37.                program on the C drive).
  38.    
  39.    If  you  have previously installed AIM II instructions  will  be
  40.    displayed  so  that you can retain any data that  you  may  have
  41.    already entered.
  42.    
  43.    Action  Item Manager II will be installed in subdirectory "\AIM"
  44.    of the designated hard disk drive.
  45.  
  46. RUNNING THE PROGRAM
  47.    To run the AIM II type the following commands:
  48.    
  49.     C:
  50.     CD \AIM
  51.     AIM
  52.    
  53.    If  you  installed  the program on a hard drive  other  than  C,
  54.    substitute  the appropriate drive letter for "C:" in  the  first
  55.    line  above.   If  you have difficulty running the  program  see
  56.    "Troubleshooting" below.
  57.    
  58.    The  first  time  you run AIM II you will be prompted  to  enter
  59.    your  name  and basic work schedule (i.e. your core  work  hours
  60.    and  the  days of the week you normally work).  This information
  61.    can  be  revised at a later time by selecting the Base  Schedule
  62.    option from the Setup menu.
  63.  
  64. TROUBLESHOOTING
  65.    The  following is a brief list of errors that may be encountered
  66.    and what to do about them.
  67.    
  68.    Out  of  Memory  or  Low Memory:  You don't have  enough  memory
  69.    below  640K to run the program.  If your computer has  at  least
  70.    512K  of  RAM, you should be able to eliminate this  problem  by
  71.    removing  memory  resident programs (TSR'S) and  device  drivers
  72.    (mouse  drivers, network drivers, etc.) to free up  conventional
  73.    memory.

  75.    Program  Aborts  with Message (DOS error 04):  This  means  that
  76.    insufficient DOS file handles have been specified.  If you  have
  77.    already  added  the  line FILES=31 to your CONFIG.SYS  file  AND
  78.    rebooted  your computer, try increasing the number a  few  at  a
  79.    time.  Reboot your computer each time you increase the number.
  80.    
  81.    Program  Locks  up  or  screen  becomes  distorted:   The  mouse
  82.    display  software in AIM can cause problems with  some  displays
  83.    (so  far,  the  problem  has been reported  only  for  some  EGA
  84.    displays).   This  can  occur even if you  don't  have  a  mouse
  85.    installed.  Adding switches to the command line that  cause  AIM
  86.    to  use a non-graphic mouse cursor usually corrects the problem.
  87.    Try running AIM with the following command:
  88.    
  89.     AIM /nv /ng
  90.    
  91.    Mouse  doesn't  work:  Your mouse driver is probably  quite  old
  92.    and  out  of  date.  Contact your mouse vendor  for  an  updated
  93.    driver.  A mouse is not required to run AIM II.
  94.    
  95.    Other  Errors:   If  at  any time you are unable  to  resolve  a
  96.    problem  with this program, call or write us a letter explaining
  97.    the  nature  of the problem.  Please also include a  description
  98.    of  your computer configuration including any TSR programs which
